Tunisia dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi and appointed Hervé Renard after a 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match at the 2026 World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed the change, making Lamouchi the first managerial casualty of the tournament.

Renard will take charge of Tunisia for their remaining group-stage matches against Japan and the Netherlands. The federation said talks over a longer-term agreement will take place after Tunisia’s World Cup campaign ends.

Lamouchi had taken over in January on a contract running until 2028. He managed only one win in five matches, including warm-up defeats to Austria and Belgium before the loss to Sweden.

Renard returns to the World Cup with extensive international experience. He previously won the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia and Ivory Coast.

The French coach also led Saudi Arabia to a 2-1 win over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. He later coached France’s women’s national team at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the Paris Olympics.

Tunisia remain in contention for qualification, but their opening defeat left them bottom of Group F with a minus-four goal difference.

East Rutherford, United States: Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France launched their bid for a third World Cup crown with a 3-1 victory over Senegal in Group I on Tuesday.

Real Madrid star Mbappe took his career World Cup goals tally to 14 –- just two behind all-time leader Miroslav Klose –- and Bradley Barcola was also on target as Les Bleus secured all three points for Didier Deschamps' side.

Mbappe darted across the penalty area to convert a brilliant Michael Olise pass on 66 minutes to break the deadlock in a contest in which France struggled badly in the first half, but came to life after the break.

Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain then came off the bench to get the second late on, before his club colleague Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back in stoppage time for Senegal.

But Mbappe saved the best for last, as he blasted in from long range in the 96th minute to seal the win, and become France's all-time top scorer with 58 goals.

The decision by coach Didier Deschamps to move Olise infield from the right wing was crucial in swinging the game the way of the two-time World Cup winners.

But it is Mbappe who grabbed the spotlight in what turned out to be a memorable 99th appearance for his country.

Mbappe renewed his extraordinary love affair with the World Cup, in which he scored in the 2018 final as France won, and netted a stunning hat-trick in their defeat on penalties to Argentina in the 2022 final in Qatar.

The 27-year-old Real Madrid striker's double took him past Pele's 12 and overtook the 13 of Lionel Messi and fellow Frenchman Just Fontaine.

He is now level with Gerd Mueller in the overall list, with only Klose and the Brazilian Ronaldo (15) still ahead of him.

France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, will be expected to build on this to ease into the last 32, with outsiders Iraq up next before a meeting with Erling Haaland's Norway.

Deschamps, in his last tournament before he steps down after 14 years in charge, has been wary of overconfidence in his talented squad.

Opponents Senegal served as a warning from the past -– France went into the 2002 World Cup as holders and favourites, but lost 1-0 to the Lions of Teranga in their opening game and never recovered, going out in the group stage without scoring a goal.

Olise outstanding

Senegal showed how strong they are before a packed house of 80,545 in a game played in bright sunshine with the skyscrapers of Manhattan in the distance.

A team led by veteran forward Sadio Mane, and featuring four starters born in France, were playing their first competitive game since the Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco in January.

Pape Thiaw's side won that in extra time, but were later stripped of their title for a walk-off protest by several players during the match. Their appeal into that is ongoing.

They were the better team in the first half, as Nicolas Jackson almost scored on the break on 25 minutes when he broke away and hit the post, before the ball ricocheted off goalkeeper Mike Maignan and went just wide.

Ismaila Sarr then put a glorious chance over the bar in first-half stoppage time, and Senegal were to regret that.

Olise and Ousmane Dembele switched positions at the interval, with the reigning Ballon d’Or moving right and leaving the area through the middle behind Mbappe to the Bayern man.

Suddenly France came to life, with Olise being denied by Edouard Mendy and then setting up Mbappe for a chance that was saved.

France thought they had a penalty on the hour mark when Mbappe went down under a Mane challenge, but referee Alireza Faghani opted not to award a spot-kick after a review.

It didn't matter, as Olise continued to tear apart the opposition and slipped in Mbappe for the opener.

It was a superb goal, and France struck again when Adrien Rabiot released substitute Barcola to run through and score.

Mbaye got one back on 95 minutes, but Mbappe had the last word.

وقال الحرم: الجماهير القطرية ستواصل التمسك بهويتها الوطنية من خلال الحضور بالثوب والغترة والعقال، مضيفاً: «سنشاهد أكثر من 1200 مشجع في المباراة المقبلة بالزي القطري، لأنه عز وفخر وهيبة وفخامة، ونريد أن نظهر للعالم أننا لا نقلد أحداً بل نعتز بهويتنا وثقافتنا».
وأوضح أن العديد من الجماهير الأجنبية أبدت إعجابها بالزي القطري وطلبت ارتداءه، إلا أن الجماهير القطرية حريصة على إبراز خصوصية هويتها الوطنية في هذا المحفل العالمي.

يدرس مسؤولو اتحاد الكرة بالتنسيق مع جماهير العنابي تنظيم مسيرة مميزة مساء اليوم الأربعاء، في فانكوفر للجماهير القطرية بالأعلام على غرار ما حدث في سان فرانسيسكو قبل مباراة سويسرا.
ويهدف الاتحاد إلى إبراز صورة جمهور العنابي باللباس والغترة والعقال وترك انطباع جيد في المدينة عن الشغف الكبير لدى جماهير كرة القدم القطرية.

فرضت ظاهرة التعادلات نفسها بقوة على منافسات كأس العالم 2026، التي دخلت يومها السادس، بعدما شهدت الجولة الأولى نتائج متقاربة عكست حجم الحذر التكتيكي الذي يسيطر على المنتخبات المشاركة.

Doha, Qatar: Almoez Ali is not looking too far ahead. As Qatar target a first-ever place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, Al Annabi’s all-time leading scorer insists belief must be matched by patience and focus.

“We are taking things one step at a time. Right now, our entire focus is on the next match against Canada. We do not want to get ahead of ourselves,” Almoez said on the sidelines of Qatar’s training session in Vancouver.

“We respect every opponent and understand that the road ahead is long and difficult, but we believe in our abilities and have faith in ourselves.”

Those words carry added weight after Qatar secured their first-ever World Cup point with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Group B favourites Switzerland.

Breel Embolo’s first-half penalty had put the Swiss on course for victory as they dominated proceedings and fired 26 shots at goal. But Al Annabi refused to wilt under pressure, staying in the contest through resilience and discipline before forcing a stoppage-time own goal by Miro Muheim under pressure from Boualem Khoukhi.

For Almoez, the draw offered more than a point.

“I think we achieved a positive result at the start of our World Cup campaign. Facing a strong team like Switzerland and coming away with a point is very important in a tournament of this magnitude,” he said.

“That match is behind us now, but the point we earned has given us great confidence and extra motivation to keep working and focus on what lies ahead.”

The striker, whose preparations for the tournament were disrupted by injury and surgery, believes Qatar’s response against Switzerland reflected qualities that had been missing.

“One of the biggest positives was the team spirit and tactical discipline we showed. Alhamdulillah, that spirit has returned after we had lost it recently,” Almoez said.

“Our fighting spirit is the result of long and hard work as a team. Every player understands the responsibility he carries. We represent an entire nation and people who expect a lot from us, so it was only natural that we fought for every ball and gave everything on the pitch.”

He also highlighted the role of goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, who emerged as Qatar’s standout performers in only his seventh international appearance.

“Mahmoud delivered an outstanding performance. His saves came at crucial moments and helped the team enormously,” Almoez said.

“He is a goalkeeper with tremendous potential who works very hard in training, and what he produced against Switzerland was the natural result of that dedication.”

Qatar now head into another significant test against co-hosts Canada in Vancouver in the early hours of Friday (1am Qatar time), with all four Group B teams level on one point after Canada came from behind to draw 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Led by American coach Jesse Marsch, Canada boast stars like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David and will enjoy strong backing from the home crowd.

“Canada are a very strong team with outstanding players. They will also be playing in front of their own fans, which gives them an advantage,” Almoez said.

“We have studied them closely, understand their strengths, and the coaching staff are preparing us accordingly.”

“I think their greatest strengths are their pace and the enthusiasm their supporters bring. They are a well-organised team with high technical quality, so we must maintain maximum concentration throughout the match.”

If Canada can count on home support, Qatar have already discovered the value of theirs in the opener in which they received massive support.

“It was an incredible feeling to see our supporters in the stands. I want to thank all the fans who travelled long distances to support the national team,” Almoez said.

“Seeing the Qatari flags, the thobes and the ghutras filled us with pride and honour. From the very first moment, we felt the fans were behind us wholeheartedly, and that had a huge impact on the players’ morale on the pitch.”

“The fans were a major presence throughout the match. In difficult moments, we drew energy from their encouragement and chants. When a player feels that people believe in him and support him, he gives everything he has. Our supporters were key partners in the result we achieved.”
