Chelsea veut rebondir

RESULT | Griquas retain Currie Cup trophy
Griquas staged a stirring second-half comeback to successfully defend their Currie Cup Premier Division title with a hard-fought 23-16 victory over the Pumas in a tense final at Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley on Saturday.
The defending champions trailed 13-10 at half-time, but showed composure and championship character after the break, adding 13 second-half points via the boot of George Whitehead and a decisive late try by replacement hooker Janco Uys.

Historic back-to-back triumph
Whitehead, playing his 150th match for Griquas, was again central to the hosts’ success. The experienced flyhalf finished with two conversions and three penalty goals, keeping the scoreboard moving at crucial stages as they completed a historic back-to-back Currie Cup triumph.
The result capped another memorable campaign for the Northern Cape side, who absorbed long periods of pressure, stayed patient in possession, and struck the decisive blow in the final stages to deny a committed Pumas outfit.
The Pumas made the stronger statement before the interval and went into the break three points ahead after an absorbing first 40 minutes in which both teams created clear scoring opportunities, although handling errors at decisive moments prevented either side from taking firm control.

Griquas opened the scoring in the eighth minute through a Whitehead penalty goal, before the Pumas hit back with the first try of the final.
Darren Adonis finished well on the right wing after Jay-Cee Nel’s intercept sparked the counter-attack, and Clinton Swart added the conversion in his 50th appearance to give the visitors a 7-3 lead.
The hosts responded in the 22nd minute when inside centre Mnombo Zwelendaba reacted quickest to scoop up a loose ball and score Griquas’ first try.
Whitehead converted to edge the Kimberley side back in front at 10-7, but Swart kept the Pumas in touch with a penalty goal three minutes later to level the scores.
Swart’s second penalty goal edged the visitors into a 13-10 advantage. The closing stages then produced drama at both ends, with Sako Makata losing possession over the line after a strong and patient Griquas lineout build-up before JJ Scheepers was denied at the other end by committed Griquas defence as the ball was dislodged over the tryline.
Bruising second half
The titanic battle continued after the restart, with both sides refusing to give ground in a bruising and increasingly tactical second half.
Griquas threatened first after the break when Makata made a telling break, but the Pumas showed heart and defensive steel to hold the hosts out near their line, absorb the pressure, and force a relieving scrum.
Whitehead struck first in the second half, landing a penalty goal in the 57th minute after the Pumas were penalised for offside to level the match at 13-13.
With the contest still in the balance, Whitehead and Swart traded penalty goals as the teams remained locked at 16-16 entering the closing stages.
The defining moment arrived five minutes from time when Uys powered over for Griquas’ second try from a strong lineout maul.
Whitehead added the conversion, giving the home side a 23-16 lead that they protected through the final minutes to seal another famous Currie Cup triumph in Kimberley – sweet joy after losing to the Pumas at the same ground in the 2022 championship decider.

Norris snatches thrilling Spanish GP pole from Antonelli
Lando Norris claimed a spectacular pole position for McLaren with a stunning lap to beat championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes in the final seconds of Saturday’s tense qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.
World champion Norris, who had missed most of second practice on Friday due to an enforced gearbox change, topped the times in one minute and 31.824 seconds to beat the 20-year-old Italian by just 0.011 seconds.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull was third, 0.140 seconds adrift, ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc with George Russell sixth in the second Mercedes.
Oscar Piastri was seventh in the second McLaren ahead of Liam Lawson in the second Red Bull, Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad.
Norris, who had described the high-risk hybrid new Madring circuit as “like Monaco on steroids”, was delighted and surprised at his success.
‘What a lap’
“What a lap. Gorgeous. Well done, guys. That might be my best one… That made me happy,” he said on team radio.
He added that he felt both “shocked and a bit surprised” at claiming his third pole of the year before being congratulated by Antonelli. “It was very close and congrats to Lando for such a great lap,” he said.
“It was a good lap and as much as we could do,” said Verstappen, who was 0.049 seconds clear of Hamilton who had been on provisional pole after their first runs and close to ending his run of 72 races since he secured his record 104th pole at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix.
The session began with news that Haas’s Oliver Bearman would be absent following his late crash in final practice and that Hamilton was ready to run after rapid repairs to his Ferrari, having avoided any penalties for ignoring instructions to park after his accident.
It was hot as the Q1 action started with the top seven separated by just three-tenths behind Russell’s best lap in 1:33.211 while, to the dismay of home fans, the only two Spaniards were eliminated.
Carlos Sainz was 17th for Williams and missed the cut ahead of Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, the two Cadillacs, Bearman and Lance Stroll, who failed to clock a competitive time in the second Aston Martin.
The pace increased in Q2 with Verstappen clocking an early 1:32.557, trimmed to 1:32.431 on his second run, to top Antonelli and both Ferraris.
The two Audis, Esteban Ocon of Haas, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls and Williams’s Alex Albon missed the top 10 cut. It was Ocon’s best qualifying result since the Japanese event in March.
Hamilton, chasing his seventh Spanish pole and first for three years, topped the first runs with 1:32.079, to beat Antonelli by 0.061, but he could not resist his rivals on their second charge — as Antonelli and then Norris went top in the final seconds.
Norris eventually took pole in 1:31.824 to grab his second pole in Spain and the 19th of his career as the top four drivers, from four different teams, were separated by only 0.19 seconds.
