Christian Eriksen says he is ‘doing well’ after collapse during Denmark game

Soccer star Christian Eriksen was at home with family and “doing well” he said on Monday, a day after collapsing on the field again while playing for Denmark.

The reassuring health update by 34-year-old Eriksen came after he clutched his chest with both hands in an off-the-ball action in the 65th minute of a friendly against Ukraine in Odense on Sunday. After dropping to the ground, Eriksen received medical attention as fellow players formed a circle around him.

He then walked off the field by himself and was taken to the hospital, where he underwent more tests. He had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted to support his heart after suffering a cardiac arrest during a European Championship match in 2021.

After updates by the team physician via statements from the Danish soccer federation, Eriksen himself posted for the first time on social media.

“I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family,” he wrote on Instagram.

“As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major effect on both me and my family, but I want to assure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.”

Eriksen said his “recovery has already started.”

“In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years,” he wrote.

“Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.”

Eriksen said he focus now was on “recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”

Danish PM and players send best wishesIn a post on Facebook late Sunday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen wrote she was “sending my warmest thoughts to Christian Eriksen and to all those around him who are affected.”

She adding that she had been relieved to hear an update on his condition after the initial shock of his latest health incident.

Argentina striker Lautaro Martinez and Manchester United players Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were among the players to react to Eriksen’s Instagram post on Monday with well-wishes.

The game on Sunday was abandoned with no further play following Eriksen’s collapse after the referee conferred with staff and players from both teams. Denmark was leading 2-1 at the time.

Neither team qualified for the 2026 World Cup beginning this week in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

How Eriksen resumed playing with ICDEriksen was fitted with an ICD in the months after suffering his cardiac arrest during Denmark’s group game against Finland in the European Championship five years ago.

An ICD is described by the British Heart Foundation as a “small electrical device that can treat people with dangerously abnormal heart rhythms.”

The device is put under the skin in the chest, near the collarbone, the foundation said, and can give electrical pulses to help your heart beat normally if it notices an abnormal heart rhythm.

Commenting after Eriksen’s collapse on Sunday, Denmark team physician Morten Boesen said “as I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.” There has been no further information from team officials about what exactly caused Eriksen to clutch his chest.

Italian health regulations prohibit players from playing with a fitted ICD, so Eriksen had to leave his Italian team – Inter Milan – to resume his playing career after the 2021 incident.

That happened in England with Brentford in 2022, before three years at Manchester United (2022-25), which he left as a free agent last year.

His current team is Wolfsburg in Germany, where he has a contract through the 2026-27 season. The team, which was relegated from the top-tier Bundesliga last month, wished him a swift recovery Sunday.

Netherlands lose Jurrien Timber to groin injury ahead of FIFA World Cup; Geertruida called up

New York [US], June 9 (ANI): The Netherlands have suffered a major setback ahead of the FIFA World Cup after defender Jurrien Timber was ruled out of the tournament due to a groin injury, the Dutch football federation announced on Monday.

According to ESPN, the 24-year-old Arsenal full-back, who last featured as a substitute in Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, will leave the Dutch camp following the team’s final World Cup warm-up match against Uzbekistan.

“The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner," the Netherlands said in a statement, according to ESPN.

“In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan," the statement added.

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has drafted in Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida as Timber’s replacement ahead of the tournament.

“Over the last couple of days, we’d already had the feeling that this would be the decision. In the end, we sat down with Jurriën late last night and again this morning, and unfortunately, we had to make this decision," Koeman told Dutch broadcaster NOS, as per ESPN.

“With Jurriën in the squad, we have eight defenders; without him, there are seven, and that’s not enough. So you have to make a decision. We had Geertruida with the squad right up until the match against Algeria, so it wouldn’t be too much of a struggle to bring him in. We didn’t wait any longer because his situation wasn’t expected to improve any time soon," Koeman added.

Timber managed around an hour on the pitch in Arsenal’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, including extra time, before the match was decided on penalties. However, Koeman declined to blame the Premier League club for the player’s condition.

“You can’t blame the club, and I don’t want to either. It is clear, however, that those minutes didn’t help," he said.

“If he’d only had to play one more match in the coming period, it might still have been possible. But a major tournament wasn’t on the cards. He hasn’t been fit for a long time and still has symptoms that aren’t healing quickly, meaning he won’t be match fit in the short term," the Dutch coach concluded.

The Netherlands begin their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14 before facing Sweden and Tunisia in the group stage. (ANI)

IPL 2026: Top 5 finishers of the season

The 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has finally come to an end, with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru dominating throughout the season to retain their crown and became only the third team to do so in the history of the marquee T20 tournament.

The role of a finisher in T20 cricket has been one of the oldest prerequisites for success in the format. Whatever level of evolution the game goes through, the role of the finisher will always stay the same, scoring runs in the back end of innings. The IPL has, in its 19 seasons, been the hotbed for some of the most dangerous finishers in the game, and be they veterans or newbies, multiple players have made their mark in the 2026 edition.

Here are the top five finishers from recent IPL 2026 season:

5. David Miller - Delhi Capitals

David Miller is a true veteran of the IPL. In his 15th season of the IPL, the experienced Protea southpaw has once again demonstrated why he is so highly rated as a finisher and a lower-order batter in the format and the cricketing circuit as a whole. He has built his reputation as one of the cleanest hitters of the cricket ball and can turn games around all on his own.

Batting as a finisher for the Delhi Capitals, Miller was a key presence in the lower order, scoring 211 runs at a strike rate of 154.01. He scored a quickfire 22 off just 10 balls in Bengaluru against champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru to take them home in a nervy chase and scored a 28-ball 51 against the Punjab Kings in a chase of 211, which took the Capitals home despite losing wickets early.

4. Suryansh Shedge - Punjab Kings

All-rounder Suryansh Shedge is one of the most highly rated finishers in the domestic circuit. Playing for Mumbai, Shedge is one of the cleanest six hitters in the domestic game, capable of clean striking and taking the game on in the back-end overs. Signed by the Kings in 2025 on the back of fantastic performances in the domestic game, he was given a consistent platform in the 2026 season, playing a lower-order role.

In the seven games he played in IPL 2026, he scored 158 runs at a whopping strike rate of 175.56. He scored a half-century against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, which was his first game of the season. He has established himself as a mainstay of the Punjab Kings' batting unit, scoring vital runs in the death overs.

3. Heinrich Klaasen - Sunrisers Hyderabad

Heinrich Klaasen

Heinrich Klaasen has a reputation for being one of the most destructive batters in the white-ball game and the T20 format. He has the capability of clean hitting, sending the ball long into the stands and dealing in sixes with ease. Despite a reputation of being one of the deadliest finishers, Klaasen's added prowess against spin has seen him play an anchor-accumulator role in 2026 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The Protea batter has been one of SRH's mainstays, scoring 624 runs at a strike rate of 160.00, with six half-centuries. He was their middle-order anchor in the season, providing the stable base after the top-order blitz. Despite this, Klaasen has shown his prowess in the death overs, striking at a whopping 187 in the final overs of the game. His batting role and runs were a major contributor to the Sunrisers' playoff run in IPL 2026.

2. Tim David - Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Tim David has been the reliable finisher for the champions, playing key roles in their title triumphs in 2025 and 2026. The Australian batter is one of the most fearsome hitters in the T20 circuit, being able to hit long sixes and clear boundaries with his long levers. He has been vital for the champions by adding extra runs at the back end of the innings.

David has had a fantastic season in IPL 2026, scoring 305 runs at a whopping strike rate of 188.27. He scored a 25-ball 70 against the Chennai Super Kings, taking their bowlers to the cleaners and hitting eight big sixes. The team have profiled him correctly, managing his entry points, which has allowed him to thrive as a finisher.

1. Donovan Ferreira - Rajasthan Royals

Traded in from the Delhi Capitals in a deal which saw Nitish Rana go the other way, the big-hitting South African, Donovan Ferreira, was expected to slot in as the Rajasthan Royals' designated finisher. He came into IPL 2026 with a reputation as a clean hitter, but he started the season slowly, not being able to get significant scores in the early matches.

He announced himself with a half-century in a losing cause against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, being the only player to get a score as the team were bundled out for 159. From there, he took off as the Royals' designated finisher, scoring vital runs in the back end. He scored an unbeaten 52 off just 26 balls in a thrilling chase against the Punjab Kings, which earned him the player of the match award. He also scored a 14-ball 47 against the Delhi Capitals and an 11-ball 38 against the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. He finished the season with a tally of 317 runs at a strike rate of 179.10.
